Keeping skills current
EXCEEDS the federal floor: OAC 310:677-11-1(a)(1) requires the facility to provide 2 hours of in-service training specific to job assignment EACH MONTH (= 24 hrs/yr, double the federal 12 hrs/yr under 42 CFR 483.95), complete a performance review of every nurse aide at least once every 12 months, and have in-service education generally supervised by an RN with ≥2 years experience (≥1 year in LTC).
Stepping into the role
State overlay tracking the federal rule plus extras (OAC 310:677-11-3): training is done by, or under the general supervision of, an RN with at least 2 years of nursing experience and at least 1 year in long-term care who has completed a course in teaching adults or has experience teaching adults/supervising aides; the DON-RN may supervise the program but shall not perform the actual training; there must be at least one qualified RN per program (as RN Supervisor or RN Instructor); an LPN may act as instructor if an RN keeps responsibility for the program; other licensed health professionals with ≥1 year of experience may supplement.
