Becoming a Staff-Development Leader in Oklahoma

Oklahoma
In Oklahoma, the nurse who leads staff education and training is commonly known as a Staff Development Coordinator / In-Service Coordinator. It’s a valued, higher-responsibility role — and we can help you prepare for it and grow your long-term-care career.
Oklahoma has no distinct 'DSD' credential — that title is California's. Its CNA equivalent is the 'long term care aide,' and under OAC 310:677-11-3 training is done by, or under the general supervision of, an RN with ≥2 years of nursing experience (≥1 in long-term care) who has completed a course in (or has experience) teaching adults or supervising aides; the DON may supervise but not perform the actual training, and each program needs at least one qualified RN (as RN Supervisor or RN Instructor). Notably, Oklahoma EXCEEDS the federal in-service floor: OAC 310:677-11-1 requires 2 hours of in-service each month — 24 hours/year, double the federal 12 — generally supervised by a qualified RN, plus an annual performance review. To take on the role, a qualifying RN is designated by the facility; the Oklahoma State Department of Health approves the training program (the entity), not the individual, so there is no separate personal credential to earn.
