In-Service Coordinator / Staff Development Coordinator (facility-designated). Nurse-aide training is led by an RN instructor.
Keeping skills current
Follows the federal 12 hrs/yr (42 CFR 483.95) inside facilities. For the CNA credential, recertification requires 24 hours of continuing education in the 2-year period before certification expires, plus at least 8 hours of paid nursing-related work (Haw. Code R. 17-1445).
Stepping into the role
State overlay (Haw. Code R. 17-1444-5): training by or under general supervision of an RN with >=2 years' nursing experience, >=1 year in nursing-facility services, who has also completed a course in teaching adults or equivalent experience; in facility-based programs the director of nursing may give general supervision but is PROHIBITED from performing the actual training; supplemental trainers from 15 specified health fields may teach under RN supervision with >=1 year of field experience.

SPLIT: Department of Human Services (DHS) — Med-QUEST Division runs the Nurse Aide Training & Competency Evaluation Program (NATCEP) and the Nurse Aide Registry (HAR Title 17, Ch. 1444 & 1445); the Department of Health (DOH) licenses nursing facilities (HAR Title 11, Ch. 94.1, which replaced the repealed Ch. 94).
