Becoming a Staff-Development Leader in Iowa

Iowa
In Iowa, the nurse who leads staff education and training is commonly known as a Staff Development / In-Service Coordinator. It’s a valued, higher-responsibility role — and we can help you prepare for it and grow your long-term-care career.
Iowa has NO distinct DSD-style credential. The nurse-aide program is administered by the Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing (DIAL), which approves the 75-hour course plans and maintains the Direct Care Worker Registry. Training is by/under the general supervision of an RN (2 yrs experience, 1 in LTC); instructors are RNs who completed a course in teaching adults or have equivalent experience, the Director of Nursing is barred from doing the actual training, and other facility staff may instruct only with specific DIAL approval (Iowa Admin. Code r. 441-81.16, now 441-81.13). In-service follows the federal 12 hrs/yr after an annual performance review (42 CFR 483.95). A nurse takes on the role by facility designation, plus qualifying as a DIAL-approved RN instructor to teach — no separate credential exists.
