Becoming a Staff-Development Leader in Missouri

Missouri

In Missouri, the nurse who leads staff education and training is commonly known as a State-approved Nursing Assistant Instructor / facility staff development. It’s a valued, higher-responsibility role — and we can help you prepare for it and grow your long-term-care career.

Missouri has no California-style DSD title, but it does impose a real, state-specific approval to be the nurse aide training instructor. Under 19 CSR 30-84.010(12) the instructor must be a Missouri-licensed RN (not on the Employee Disqualification List) with >=2 years' nursing experience and >=1 year of LTC experience in the last 10 years, AND must complete a state-approved Nursing Assistant Instructor Workshop, get a DHSS letter of approval, appear on the DHSS approved-instructor list, and take a 4-hour update every 5 years. So while there is no separate 'staff development director' credential, a nurse cannot instruct on federal qualifications alone — the Instructor Workshop and DHSS approval are required. Annual aide in-service follows the federal 12-hour floor.

How the role works in Missouri — official details

Commonly called
State-approved Nursing Assistant Instructor / facility staff development (in-service) coordinator
State credential
No distinct state credential — the facility designates the role.
Keeping skills current (in-service)
Follows federal 12 hrs/yr (42 CFR 483.95). Separate registry-active status requires >=8 hrs paid nursing work per 24 months (19 CSR 30-84.010(18)).
Qualifying for the role
Strong state overlay: instructor must be a Missouri-licensed RN (or compact/temporary permit), not on the Employee Disqualification List, with >=2 yrs nursing experience and >=1 yr LTC experience in the last 10 yrs, AND must complete a state-approved Nursing Assistant Instructor Workshop, receive a DHSS letter of approval, be listed on the DHSS approved-instructor list, and complete a 4-hr update every 5 yrs (19 CSR 30-84.010(12)(A), (16)).
State approval & process
No California-style DSD credential, but there IS a mandatory state approval to instruct: complete the Nursing Assistant Instructor Workshop through a DHSS certifying agency; DHSS issues a letter of approval and maintains the approved-instructor list. A nurse cannot instruct the program on federal qualifications alone.
