Keeping skills current
He-P 803.18 mandates annual in-service education on specified topics but does not set a numeric hour requirement; the federal 12 hrs/yr (42 CFR 483.95) is the operative floor. Note NH is distinctive in that nurse aides are LICENSED (LNAs) by the Board of Nursing and renew their license through the Board.
Stepping into the role
State OVERLAY (Nur 704.04): the LNA-program coordinator/primary instructor must be an unencumbered NH or compact RN with 2 years' experience with the elderly or chronically ill (1 of those years in long-term care) and must demonstrate teaching competence via a baccalaureate degree or a Board-approved Train-the-Trainer course — closely tracking but articulating the federal 42 CFR 483.152 standard. Instructors are further governed by Nur 704.06.
