Georgia

In Georgia, the nurse who leads staff education and training is commonly known as a In-Service Coordinator / Staff Development Coordinator. It’s a valued, higher-responsibility role — and we can help you prepare for it and grow your long-term-care career.

Georgia has NO distinct staff-development-director credential. The nursing-home rule (Ga. Comp. R. & Regs. 111-8-56-.04(10)-(11)) requires an 'active in-service nursing education program... developed and conducted by a registered nurse... under the direction of the director of nursing services' — that RN is the de-facto in-service/staff-development coordinator, but there is no separate state title or approval to earn for it. To be a Nurse Aide Training Program instructor, DCH requires a Georgia-licensed RN with 2 years' experience, at least 1 year as an RN in a long-term care facility (nursing home). The state rule sets no numeric annual in-service hours, so nurse aides follow the federal 12 hours/year.

How the role works in Georgia — official details

Commonly called

In-Service Coordinator / Staff Development Coordinator (no statutory title; the rule requires the in-service program be conducted by an RN under the director of nursing services)

State credential

No distinct state credential — the facility designates the role.

Keeping skills current (in-service)

State rule requires an 'active in-service nursing education program... in effect for all nursing personnel,' in writing, showing frequency, with attendance/progress records (111-8-56-.04(10)-(11)) — but sets no numeric annual hours. Nurse aides therefore follow the federal 12 hrs/yr (42 CFR 483.95).

Qualifying for the role

State overlay: NATP Program Coordinator and Instructor(s) must be Georgia-licensed nurses; the instructor must be an RN with 2 years of nursing experience, including 1 year as an RN in a long-term care facility. The facility in-service program itself must be 'developed and conducted by a registered nurse... under the direction of the director of nursing services' (111-8-56-.04(10)).

State approval & process

No separate state approval to hold the staff-development/in-service role — the facility designates the RN who runs the program. The nurse-aide TRAINING PROGRAM is approved through DCH/its contractor; no individual DSD-style credential exists.
