Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We've got answers.

A Director of Staff Development (DSD) is a licensed nurse who plans, delivers and evaluates the education and in-service training for staff in a skilled nursing facility, and often instructs its Nurse Assistant Training Program (NATP). In most states the same role is called the Staff Development Coordinator, In-Service Coordinator or Nurse Educator; California is the one state that formalizes it as a Department-approved credential. See what a DSD does day to day.

No, an RN is not required. You need an active California nursing license — LVN or RN — with at least two years of nursing experience, at least one of which is caring for chronically ill or elderly patients in an acute-care, skilled-nursing or similar setting. The governing rule is Title 22 § 71829; the two qualifying pathways are walked through in how to become a DSD in California.

A one-time payment of $79 — no subscription and no hidden fees. That covers all 24 contact hours, the final exam, and your verifiable certificate. Checkout is handled securely by Stripe.

The course is 24 contact hours. Most students finish within 1–2 weeks, but you have 90 days from enrollment to complete it at your own pace.

Yes — it is entirely online and self-paced. Work through the modules on any device, on your own schedule, and pick up where you left off. There are no live sessions to attend.

It is built to meet the education requirement for Directors of Staff Development and NATP instructors set out in California Code of Regulations, Title 22 § 71829, and it is written and kept current directly from the regulations.

Yes. When you finish every module and pass the final exam (80% or higher), your certificate is generated instantly with a unique verification code and QR code. Download it as a PDF, print it, or share the verification link — an employer or surveyor can confirm it is genuine at any time.

You get 3 attempts at the 100-question final exam at no extra cost within your 90-day access period; you need 80% to pass, and each attempt draws a fresh set of questions. Module quizzes allow 3 attempts each.

You submit the CDPH 279 application (or E279 for online programs) to the Department’s Training Program Review Unit with your certificate and experience. The whole process, including the review clocks, is walked through in the CDPH 279 application guide.

Yes. The core skills — building an in-service program, teaching adults, documenting competency and meeting the federal training rules (42 CFR Part 483) — are the same nationwide, and the certificate of completion is recognized across the country. Only California layers its own state DSD approval on top; see how the role works in your state.

Largely yes — the same job under different names. “Director of Staff Development” is California’s term; elsewhere it is the Staff Development Coordinator, In-Service Coordinator or Nurse Educator. The difference between a state-approved role and a job title is explained in DSD vs. in-service coordinator.

Two things run alongside each other: your nursing-license CE never stops, and the facility’s staff-development program is renewed on its own cycle. The 24 hours you complete to qualify, your license CE, and the program renewal are sorted out in what CE a DSD needs to stay certified.

Yes — if you are training several nurses or equipping a facility, we offer bulk and site options. Tell us what you need on the For Facilities page and a licensed nurse will reply with pricing.
