Becoming a Staff-Development Leader in Louisiana
Every skilled nursing facility needs a nurse to lead its orientation and in-service education, and the core skills are the same across the country. Louisiana
In Louisiana, the nurse who leads staff education and training is commonly known as a Nurse Aide Training Program Coordinator / In-Service. It’s a valued, higher-responsibility role — and we can help you prepare for it and grow your long-term-care career.
Louisiana has no California-style DSD credential; the role exists under the federal floor plus a state overlay. To coordinate a nurse-aide training program you must be an RN with at least 2 years of nursing experience (1 year with the elderly/chronically ill) AND hold a VTIE, CTTIE, 'train-the-trainer' certificate, or a master's degree (LAC 48:I.10017) — that train-the-trainer requirement is Louisiana's addition. The program and its coordinator/instructors are approved by the LDH Health Standards Section; there is no separate standalone staff-development credential to earn. Facilities must give each aide 12 compensated hours of ongoing in-service per year (LAC 48:I.10045).
