Keeping skills current
12 hrs/yr. LAC 48:I.10045: each nurse aide shall receive and be compensated for 12 hours of ongoing training per year, provided by appropriately trained staff and documented. Matches the federal 12 hrs/yr; no numeric overlay above it.
Stepping into the role
State overlay ON TOP of the federal rule. LAC 48:I.10017 (Coordinators, Instructors and Trainers): the program COORDINATOR must be an RN with a minimum of 2 years of nursing experience (at least 1 year caring for the elderly or chronically ill) AND must have completed a VTIE, CTTIE, 'train-the-trainer'-type program, or hold a master's degree or higher — the train-the-trainer/VTIE/CTTIE piece is Louisiana's addition beyond 42 CFR 483.152. Instructors must be RNs or LPNs with a current Louisiana license and 2 years caring for the elderly/chronically ill. Coordinator must oversee no more than two programs and be present at least 50% of program duration.

Louisiana Department of Health (LDH), Health Standards Section (HSS) — approves nurse-aide training and competency evaluation programs (NATCEP) and maintains the CNA/DSW registry.
