Keeping skills current
Follows the federal floor: OAC 3701-17-07.1 requires each nurse aide receive at least 12 hours of formal in-service education each year (calculated from the aide's start date), with performance reviews conducted at least 90 days after competency/start and annually thereafter. In-service itself may be delivered by the aide's immediate supervisor or a nurse the facility designates — no special credential required for in-service delivery.
Stepping into the role
State overlay ABOVE the federal rule for the training-program Primary Instructor (OAC 3701-18-09(C)): must be an RN with at least 2 years of nursing experience (at least 1 in long-term care) AND hold a Train-the-Trainer (TTT) certificate from an ODH director-approved TTT program (OAC 3701-18-16) — or qualify via an alternative pathway (1 year teaching adults plus the approved TTT manual, or, within the prior 3 years, at least 1 year of direct nurse-aide supervision in an LTC facility). A separate Program Coordinator handles overall program administration.
