Becoming a Staff-Development Leader in Minnesota
Every skilled nursing facility needs a nurse to lead its orientation and in-service education, and the core skills are the same across the country. Minnesota
In Minnesota, the nurse who leads staff education and training is commonly known as a Nursing assistant training program primary instructor / facility in-service. It’s a valued, higher-responsibility role — and we can help you prepare for it and grow your long-term-care career.
Minnesota has no distinct 'Director of Staff Development' credential. The Minnesota Department of Health approves the nurse aide training program (NATCEP) and the facility designates an RN primary instructor who meets the federal 2-year / 1-year-LTC experience rule; MDH also requires a curriculum-specific Train-the-Trainer certificate to teach the Minnesota State Nurse Aide Curriculum. In-service follows the federal 12 hours/year — Minn. R. 4658.0100 requires in-service 'sufficient to ensure continuing competence' but no higher number. A nurse takes on the role by being the qualified RN the facility designates; there is no separate individual state credential to apply for.
